You'll find plenty of online price charts for AC repairs, but real prices vary widely by region, equipment, season and contractor. Rather than quote numbers that may not apply to you, this guide explains what drives the cost so you can ask better questions and compare quotes.

How to compare quotes

  1. Ask for written quotes with model numbers for both indoor and outdoor units.
  2. Confirm the contractor's license and insurance with your state's licensing board.
  3. Compare warranty terms for parts and labor.
  4. Ask what's included: permits, thermostat, line set, drain work, haul-away.
  5. Be cautious of quotes made without looking at the home.

Repair or replace?

Age, repair frequency, refrigerant type and comfort all matter. See our guide on repair vs. replace for a framework, and ask a licensed contractor to price both options.

Safety first

Some HVAC checks are safe for any homeowner: the thermostat, the air filter, a single breaker reset, and keeping the outdoor unit clear. Others are not. Leave refrigerant, capacitors, wiring inside the unit, and anything involving gas to a licensed professional. If you ever smell gas or see smoke or sparks, leave the home and call 911 or your gas utility from a safe place.
